Danielle Thur

Danielle Thur will now head New York operations for Entertainment Fushion Group THis is a national branding, communications and marketing agency. Thur was the Founder and Principal of Whisper PR Inc.

Danielle said, “We are embarking on a new decade in public relations. It is a time of great change across the industry and I look forward to being able to offer celebrity, entertainment and media services to our existing clientele and enhancing our client services across both coasts. EFG has proven itself to offer unparalleled entertainment based marketing, social media and mobile marketing services and I am looking forward to this new step in my career.”

I really wanted to share this because I am a Fashion Merchandising major and I think it is very interesting that I can use both my major and my minor in Public Relations to do something with both of them. I was nervous at first about getting a major in Fashion and a minor in Public relations, but now I know that I will be fine.

Best Buy turns to Facebook for recycling campaign

Best buy is using Facebook, like so many other companies have been doing to help recycle. Best Buy launched this on Earth Day.

““Recycle It On” is aiming to collect one billion pounds of old or obsolete electronics and appliances for recycling from Best Buy’s more than one million Facebook fans. The ongoing campaign will run until the target is reached.”

http://www.prweekus.com/pages/login.aspx?returl=/best-buy-turns-to-facebook-for-recycling-campaign/article/168569/&pagetypeid=28&articleid=168569&accesslevel=2&expireddays=0&accessAndPrice=0
I wanted to talk about this because I think it shows just how prominent technology has become in our world. If a large company like Best Buy is using Facebook, I can only imagine the smaller companies that are using it. And now with all of the other social networks that are popping up, I can only imagine how much companies are going to begin to use these networks to get their name or campaign out to the world.

I think it is great that Best Buy is starting this for the earth! I am sure that it will be a success with as large as Facebook has become! Great job Best Buy, keep up the good work!

Panties!

I was browsing the web on interesting news to write about.. And I came to one about Lane Bryant and the commerical that FOX and ABC refused to run. The Lane Bryant commercial showed two plus sized women in panties which FOX and ABC refused to air on television because it was too risky.

“Lane Bryant thinks the Disney-owned network is “prejudiced against boobs” and has rallied cries of weight discrimination against the full-figured, an insider told The New York Post on Thursday.”

“The cleavage of the plus-size models, they said, was excessive, and we don’t think that’s the case. It certainly appears to be discrimination against full-sized women.”

Although my question is how can Victoria Secret run their ads with girl that are wearing the same thing or less. Is it really just because the Lane Bryants models have bigger breasts? Because that does not seem fair to me.  Let me know what you think!?!

Bret Michaels in Intensive Care

One of my favorite television shows is “The Apprentice” and this season it is with celebrities. This makes the show way more interesting for me. They have many projects to complete, one of my favorites was a Harry Potter challenge. In this challenge Bret Michaels really stepped up and took leadership in the project. But I just found out that he is now in intensive care.

This is what KTLA.com has said  “Rocker turned reality star Bret Michaels is being closely monitored by doctors in the intensive care unit of a an undisclosed hospital in Los Angeles — four days after suffering a brain hemorrhage. Doctors are still trying to find the source of his brain hemorrhage, and the 47-year-old former Poison front-man is under 24-hour surveillance, according to an update on Michaels’ website.”

This is so scary to me. According to People.com, Michaels likened the pain to getting repeatedly hit in the head by a baseball bat. Doctors call this type of headache a “thunderclamp headache.” My Dad just feel off a work truck and had very bad head problems, so this story hits close to home.

The rocker’s tour manager, Janna Elias, has been posting the online updates.

“As we all know Bret is a fighter and we are hopeful that once all is complete the slurred speech, blurred vision and dizziness, etc. will be eliminated and all functions will return to normal. Everyone at Michaels Entertainment would like to thank all fans and friends for their continued thoughts and prayers through this difficult time.”

I hope he recovers fast!!!

What is Public Relations

Honestly… I am a getting a Public Relations minor, and although I have been taking these classes for three years now it is still hard for me to pin point what Public Relations really is. And the reason I can pin point it is because it is too broad to do so. I first wanted to major in Public Relations because I want to be an event planner (like so many in the Public Relations major), but after getting into the actual classes I decided to change my major. The first classes that I took all we did was write! Which is NOT for me! But now that I have taken more classes to finish up my minor I am finding that event planning is still considered under Public Relations, that is how broad of a major and industry this is.

This is how one website defined Public Relations “The main goal of a public relations department is to enhance a company’s reputation. Staff that work in publicrelations, or as it is commonly known, PR, are skilled publicists. They are able to present a company or individual to the world in the best light. The role of a public relations department can be seen as a reputation protector.”

http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-public-relations.htm

I do not think anyone can really define public relations. It is way to broad and has many aspects that most people do not see. I am glad that I kept public relations as my minor! I think it is going to be a great thing on my resume.

Kell Hell

As a fashion major, I love any show that has to do with fashion. That is why I am a fan of shows like “The Hills” and “The City”, even though most people find these shows to be fake and not interesting. But I watch these shows because of the fashion! So when I found out about the new show “Kell on Earth” I was so excited (other than the fact that I live in a city that does not have bravo on the cable).

I first saw Kelly Cutrone on “The Hills” and although I found her to be very scary, she is what the fashion industry needs. Someone who always gets there work done and also tells it how it is. Cutrone is the founder of the PR firm for People’s Revoltion. She is very known in the fashion world and people know not to mess with her.

Kell on Earth will follow Cutrone — who has previously appeared on MTV’s The Hills and The City reality series — as she juggles running of her New York-based People’s Revolution public relations, branding and marketing firm with her role as a single mother.”

I am really looking forward to watching all of the series when I go home from the summer, I made sure my mom recorded them!

Kate Gosselin

Kate has moved on to many other things after her divorce from Jon. One of those things is “Dancing with the Stars”. After being put down many times by the judges, Kate was finally kicked off from the show. She could hardly speak after it was announced because of her tears. She said, “I’m very, very honored to have been here… I’m sorry I’m crying. I’m a crybaby… I had a wonderful teacher… I’ve really grown to love everyone.” Kate said. To the viewers she said: “Thank you for believing in me, probably more than I believed in myself.”

I personally think it was about time that she was kicked off. She was not the best of dancers, but her fans kept her around. I think it is a good thing that she can now focus on what is important.. her kids. I  know that I am not in her position, but I do feel like she is letting all of this media hype get to her. Her children should be number one not a television show. I think her 15 minutes of fame have gone on way longer than 15 minutes and it’s time to take her out of the spot light.

I know that I have not been in her position and do not have eight children, but I think that having one kid is a big enough responsibility. So I can only imagine having eight and doing a television show like “Dancing with the Stars” that takes up so much time.

I guess we will have to see what she does next with her life, hopefully it will be something to do with her children!

TOW 16: Tips on blogging!

Looking back on my semester of blogging there are many things that I would have done differently! I feel like most people in my Public Relations class would feel the same way.

1) Do blogging for fun!! It is much harder to enjoy blogging and to keep up with your blog if you are writing about topics that are of no interest to you.

2) Comment on others blogs. This creates feedback for not only you, but the other blogger. We can really help each other to expand your thoughts and to become better wrtiers.

3)Keep up with your blog. It is important to not slack. This goes for students in a class. Waiting for the last minute to write on your blog really takes out all of the fun of blogging.

4) Do not be scared to write. I hate for other people to read about what I have to say, but take risks. There are many other bloggers who feel the same way.

5) Proof read what you have written. Just skim over what you have said to check for any mistakes.

6) Learn how to upload pictures and videos. This will make your blog much more interesting to the readers.

7) Actually use the category tool. This makes your blog so much more organized. When you keep your blog uncategorized it is very difficult to see the topics that the reader wants to know about.

8) Get to the point that you want to make. You do not need to go on and on about something. Readers will become very bored if you do this.

9) Reply to bloggers that comment on your blog. This helps to get feedback and really create a network for yourself.

10) Most of all… HAVE FUN!! Be yourself on your blog and don’t hold back!

Good luck blogging!!!

TOW: Social Media News Release

The topic of the week is on Social Media News Releases. I have already had to do research on SMNR for a past blog. Here is a brief description!

Social Media News Releases are also called Multimedia News Releases or Smart Media Release (or SMNRs). These news releases are much more advanced than the normal news release. Before Social Media News Releases, news releases were plain and simple. They did not have photos, videos or audio capabilities. Things have changes because now “these releases, pioneered by the major electronic distribution services, such as Business Wire, PR Newswire, and Marketwire, now make it possible to embed a news release with high resolution photos/graphics, video, and audio components” (Pg. 136 in Public Relations Writing and Media Techniques (6th Ed.). The services that were mentioned above have also “teamed up with search engines such as Google, Yahoo!, and MSN to promote maximum exposure of the news release through search engine optimization” (Pg. 136Public Relations Writing and Media Techniques (6th Ed.).

The other thing that I really think is important is to know the advantages of writing SMNR:

Advantages of SMRN are that they are much more advanced which makes them more interesting to read. Before they became so advanced they were sometimes very boring and would lose the interest of the readers. Manny Ruiz, president of Hispanic PR Wire, says, “The press release of the last century is dead. In its places is a dynamic service that is more of an interactive marketing tool, more relevant and compelling for journalists; the difference is it’s not only for journalist” (Pg. 137Public Relations Writing and Media Techniques (6th Ed.). The new press releases really get the attention of journalists.

TOW: 5 Steps to Multimedia Storytelling

I had to take the Poynter News University course “5 Steps to Multimedia Storytelling” for my Public Relations class. Here is the link if you want to check it out: http://www.newsu.org/node/338. It was an interesting class, but it was not one of my favorites of the Poynter courses that we have had to take.

What I learned:

I learned the different steps for writing for multimedia. Here are the different ways to getting the news out to the public and to capture their attention. With all of the new technology that is being introduced it is important to keep things interesting! There is text, video, audio, animated graphics, maps, and of course photos.

What surprised me:

All of the items that are necessary to bring. There were so many things that I never thought that I would need such as a power strip, a vest to hold items in, and extra batteries for the camera. It was really helpful to think about all of these things. When I get out into the real world things will not be so easy, and I doubt other reporters would let me borrow some batteries if my camera died! 🙂

What I want to know more about:

There were a lot of things that I want to learn more about. I feel like I will learn a lot of the things by just experiencing it first hand. I do not know exactly what I want to know more about, but I am sure I will have many more questions when I began my career!

I really enjoyed taking these courses! I would suggest them for anyone working in the Public Relations industry!
